Stonehaven Golf Club is worth a visit

Stonehaven Golf Club has been cleverly, and attractively, fitted onto the cliffs overlooking Craigeven Bay, Garron Point, Skatie Shore and Perthumie Bay, which lie just north of the old harbour town of Stonehaven on Scotland's northeast coast. Stonehaven itself is some 15 miles south of Aberdeen from which it can be reached by the A90, turning off at Cowie. The club was founded in 1888.
The bays and promontories feature on several of the holes and if you are nervous about driving over deep gullies, where a lost ball is truly lost for ever, then this is not the course for you. But if you enjoy playing a short course, 4,805 yards off the yellow tees, with some very interesting holes then go to Stonehaven Golf Club.
A weekday round costs £18 and a weekend round is £20, with day tickets costing £25 and £28 respectively. After two rounds you'd feel it; there are several steep inclines but your efforts will be well rewarded.
In October 2008 the course was in excellent condition. The 1st hole offers a kind, wide fairway down to the green on top of the cliffs; overshoot the green by too much and your ball is well lost. The 376 yard 5th provides another wide fairway and as it's all downhill, there's the opportunity for some gratifying long drives. The 9Th, 10th, 11th and 12th are on the other side of the railway line, away from the cliffs and are quite different, more like a parkland course. Then there's the 13th where you're faced with a very deep ravine with the fairway seeming to be a long way away and having mastered that you know you have to it again on the 15th. This is a 156 yard par 3 which asks for no more than a very accurate tee shot to carry the gully and drop the ball onto the small green. The 16th, 17th and 18th are made harder by the severe slope; land your ball on the wrong spot on the fairway and watch it roll down the hill away from the green.
Stonehaven golf course has only one par 5 and 7 par 3s but it's well worth a visit.
